UAV-V2X

UAV Placement for Enhanced Coverage in Urban Areas

Project Timeline: April 2024 – March 2028
Funding Body: ADVANCE CRT: Doctoral Centre for Research Training in Advanced Networks for Sustainable Societies
Role: Principal Investigator
UAV relay nodes extending V2X coverage in urban environments.

This project explores the strategic placement of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to assist V2X communications, addressing coverage gaps in dense urban environments. Urban canyons and high-rise buildings often obstruct direct communication links, leading to signal degradation and connectivity loss.

We propose using UAVs as flexible, aerial relays to bridge these gaps and extend network coverage. By employing multi-objective optimization algorithms, we determine the optimal 3D placement of UAVs to ensure line-of-sight (LoS) connectivity for the maximum number of vehicles.

  • UAV Relays: Aerial nodes that dynamically reposition to maintain connectivity.
  • Multi-Objective Optimization: Algorithms to balance coverage, connectivity, and energy efficiency.
Project Aims
  • Optimizing UAV positioning to overcome blockage challenges.
  • Maximizing connectivity reliability where terrestrial infrastructure is insufficient.
  • Supporting high-throughput applications for next-generation intelligent transportation systems.
